Evaluation Question - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

'In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?'

'The conventions of horror films are as follows:•Blood•Death•Killing•Villain•Victim•Haunted houses and isolated settings. To obtain some background knowledge on forms and conventions of horror films I watched a few 'classic' films, such as The Ring and Scream.

Our media product uses and challenges forms and conventions of real media products:

Sound: Needs to be improved to pertain to the eeriness of the film opening.

Editing: Could be improved, at the moment the transitions between shots is not very good. The finished product will use the forms and conventions of an occult horror.

Camera: We have used and developed forms and conventions so far by use of varied camera angles and shot types.

Mise en Scene: Uses the forms and conventions of horror with dim lighting and iconography through the occult-type images.'

The above text is what I wrote at this time last year when I was evaluating my AS project. I will now evaluate the current A2 project in terms of how I feel the method and quality of my work has developed or indeed where it has faltered.

I believe that my A2 media project, much like my AS project conforms to the conventions of real media products for the most part. An area in which it does not is genre. This is down to myself and my working partners decision to create a hybrid genre of Neo Noir/Violence. Normally a piece of work in terms of film will pertain to one specific genre i.e adventure, romance, comedy but we have combined two to great affect as the end product has amalgamated these two genres into a teaser trailer that has elements of both Neo Noir and Violence.

Mise en scene: By filming at night we were able to conform to the conventions of film noir by having prominent areas of black in all shots and by also using shadows and the conventional 'noir-esque' attire.

Camera: This time round, myself and my working partner were looking to broaden our scope of shot types and be more adventurous in terms of turning and committing our ideas into film. We used a variety of camera techniques and shot types such as pan, point-of-view shot, crane shot, slow zoom and extreme long shot. All of these shots work well within the product and give the viewer more to think about and more to look at.

Sound: In terms of sound we were looking to conform to the conventions of real media products by using 'music' over the top of the film. Usually in film popular music is used to help create emotion etc and a seperate score also serves the same purpose. We did not use any diegetic sound as we felt just the images and score over the top were very powerful on their own.
